| Our
Aims
The Adoptive Families Association (AFA) recognises that
the interests of the child are the paramount consideration in adoption.
The AFA represents the interests of local and intercountry adoptive families
and provides support through each stage of the adoption experience. It
supports adoption for children in need of families, and is committed to
developing community awareness of adoption families.
Our Philosophy
The AFA:
- supports the basic principle of Australia's adoption laws, which
make the interests of children paramount in adoption
- is committed to working with both government and non-government organisations
in achieving its aims
- supports the UN Declaration on the Rights of the Child and the Hague
Convention on Intercountry Adoption. These conventions give preference
to family life in the country and culture of birth, while recognising
the place of intercountry adoption when such a situation is not available
- advocates on behalf of the adoptive child and only supports adoption
which is carried out under appropriate national and international safeguards
which protect the interests of the adopted child
.
Our Activities
The AFA provides:
- advice about adoption, both locally, and from
other countries
- advice on parenting issues involving adopted children
- a range of social activities for members
- support for families contemplating adoption or
applying to adopt
- lobbying governments on adoption related issues
- representation at adoption related summits and conferences
- access for members to the AFA's library resources (books, magazines,
videos, conference notes etc)
- a quarterly magazine of adoption issues Adoption
Australia
